Many people say, “
God won’t give you more than you can handle...” True enough, there are times when life simply seems to take care of itself, and other times of normal stress and busyness. But there are still other times of complete physical, psychological, or spiritual trial that seem to make this statement seem silly! For us to make sense of it, we must identify the missing link: “God won’t give us more than we can handle...
with his grace.”
St. Paul writes to the Corinthians: “No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it” (1 Cor 10:13). On our own we are weak, but in Christ we are strong. The ‘way out’ of the trial is through Christ, and that means relying on his power, his strength.
If we rely on our own efforts, the trials of life will make us miserable and we will feel utterly crushed and defeated. The saints go through trials, persecutions, grave losses, intense sufferings, and even to death
joyfully because of their complete trust in God’s grace. God will not test you beyond your strength…but Christ must be your strength!
