The Eucharist is the sacrament of unity, the fulfillment of the prayer of Christ “that all may be one” in Christ (John 17:21). The Eucharist is our ‘comm-
union.' When we receive communion we publicly profess our faith and unity in Christ's One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church. While our fellow Christians under ordinary circumstances cannot receive communion with us because they are not yet fully united with us in faith, life, and worship, we nonetheless pray for them and invite them to participate more fully in the life of the Church, knowing that we share a common baptism. Non-Christians cannot partake of the Eucharist because they do not share our faith in Jesus. As Catholics, we keep in mind Christ’s great desire for peace and unity among the human family, and with him we should never cease to pray “that all may be one” as we continue to glorify God by our lives and share the joy of our faith!
